Description
Development of first preconceptions for possible seasonal heat storages in order to realize the phase out of coal-fired power generation in Berlin by 2030.
Client
Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG
Partner
Steinbeis Research Institute Solites
Aim
Development of first preconcepts for the realization of seasonal heat storages for the supply area of the Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG to realize the phase out from coal-fired power generation until 2030.
Implementation
As part of a preliminary study, Solites developed initial approaches and initial concepts for seasonal heat storage in the district heating network of Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG. The decision by the Berlin Senate to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2030 means that the waste heat from coal-fired power generation, which is being fed into the district heating network, must be replaced – if possible with renewable energies. For this, a seasonal heat storage is necessary.
Results
The necessary size of a seasonal heat storage, that is needed to phase out from coal-fired power generation in Berlin, requires a future search for space as well as further technological developments for seasonal heat storage to meet the requirements of Berlin’s district heating network.
