Description

Modern district heating and cooling (DHC) systems are a key technology for the energy transition, because they enable at a large scale to couple the heat and electricity sector and hence to increase the flexibility of the overall energy system. Large thermal energy storages (TES) in DHC systems further render possible the integration of high shares of renewable energy sources, to integrate excess electricity from RES and to optimize CHP.

The project contributes towards the development of data, information and analysis tools to encourage the use of cost-effective large scale underground thermal energy seasonal storage (UTES) in smart district heating and cooling systems. Large scale thermal energy storage technologies of interest for this international collaboration are aquifer and pit thermal energy storage (ATES and PTES).

Client

IEA DHC|CHP:
INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY TECHNOLOGY COLLABORATION PROGRAMME on District Heating and Cooling including Combined Heat and Power

Partner

  • Steinbeis Research Institute Solites (DE)
  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) – CanmetENERGY (CA) (Koordinator)
  • PlanEnergi (DK)
  • Thermal Energy System Specialists (TESS) (USA)
  • IF-Tech International (IFTech) (NL)
  • Leidos (CA)

Aim

The main objective of the project is the completion of two base case studies:

  1. York University base case study assesses the economic viability of smart district cooling with integrated ambient air-cold aquifer seasonal storage in delivering near 100 % emission-free cooling of buildings and communities with efficiencies significantly higher than those of ground source heat pumps.
  2. Case study for a district heating system with integrated solar pit seasonal storage assesses the economic feasibility of the heat supply of a rural municipality in Germany with 100 % renewables including solar and biomass.

Implemetation

The project is divided into four tasks and concerns following points:

  • State of the Art Reviews for ATES and PTES
  • Two base case studies: York University for an ATES Cold storage and DHC system with integrated solar seasonal PTES for a municipality in a rural area in Germany
  • Technical economic analysis of the two case studies based on TRNSYS simulation models for ATES and PTES, which have been reviewed and validated with performance data from realised projects
  • Dissemination of the results

Results

A status report on „Design Aspects for Large-Scale Aquifer and Pit Thermal Energy Storage for DHC“ including cost information, typical applications, project examples and a list of technology suppliers is available for download here.

A technical report summarizing the review, validation and documentation of the ATES and PTES TRNSYS models as well as results of the two base case studies is under preparation and will be available for download after finalisation

Beschreibung

Quality Assurance of Borehole Heat Exchangers II

Subject

  • Geothermal energy

Task

  • Research
  • Development
  • Knowledge transfer

Funding

  • Public funds

Period

04/2016 – 03/2020 (4 years)

Budget

490,000 EUR

Description

The technology of borehole heat exchangers (BHE) is often used as a source for heat pumps for heating systems, as a heat sink for cooling systems as well as a heat storage. Both heating and cooling can be combined for a more efficient operation of the BHE-system. Since the heat energy supply from the underground is nearly infinte, shallow geothermal plants can contribute very well to a sustainable energy mix.

Installing BHE-plants is a complex intervention into the ground, so concerns about the integrity of these plants are still available. Therefore, quality assurance in all periods is needed – from the planning phase until the commissioning. In this project important aspects from a technical as well as from an economic and ecological point of view are examined.

Client

Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Germany (BMWi)

Partner

  • Steinbeis Research Institute Solites (DE)
  • Bavarian Center of Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern) (DE)
  • Universitiy of Applied Sciences Biberach – Institute of Buildings and Energy Systems (DE)
  • Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – Institute of Geography and Geoecology (DE)
  • European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER) (DE)
  • enOware GmbH (DE)
  • Burkhardt Geological und Hydrological Boring GmbH & Co.KG (DE)

Aim

In this research project, questions resulting from damages from earlier failures in BHE plants which led to massive problems are investigated. Subsequently, solutions will be developed.

Implementation

The project is divided in six parts with different focuses. Every joint research partner is working on an own subject.

Solites reveals a better understanding of the grouting process inside the borehole and how the quality of the backfilling of the boreholes after inserting the probes can be improved. For this purpose, the effects of pressure and filtration on the composition of the backfilling material und the formation of holes inside the backfilling are examined in real scale experiments.

Furthermore, it is investigated whether using a vibrator which is often used for concrete leads to an improved backfilling quality.

On basis of a better knowledge about the processes inside the borehole and of the experimental data, first simulations about the backfilling and hardening of the grouting material shall be carried out.

Results

Using the vibration technology does not show a significant improvement of the backfilling quality.

The experiments about the filtration behaviour of the backfilling material are in process. First results do show an improvement of the backfilling quality in regard to former projects.

Description

Is the heat transition in a rural area like the region of Eifel and Trier possible? Which strategies are suitable for achieving this aim?

These questions are answered within the study. The partner consortium focussed on the analysis of local ressources and values for obtaining a detailed picture of the possibilities in the region.

Client

Ministry for Environment, Energy, Food and Forestry of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz

Partner

  • Steinbeis Research Institute Solites (DE)
  • Institute for FutureEnergy and Material Flows IZES gGmbH (DE) (Coordinator)
  • Utilitiy of Trier AöR (DE)
  • Energy Agency Region Trier GmbH (DE)
  • Ecoscop Company for Environmental Consulting mbH (DE)
  • University of Applied Sciences of Trier (DE)

Aim

The regional government of Rheinland-Pfalz aims at a reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of 40 % until 2020 and of 90 % until 2050. This implies the necessity to transform also the heating sector to carbon neutrality.

The study analyses how this aim can be achieved for the region of Eifel and Trier in an exemplary way.

Implementation

The study includes following parts:

  • Analysis of the sectoral heat demand
  • Heat generation potential
  • Efficiency potential of the building sector
  • Development of scenarios

Results

The study shows that the heat transition requires enormous efforts and new concepts.

None of the derived scenarios is sufficient for achieving the ambitious aims of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz, for reducing GHG emissions by 90 % until the year 2050.
